We welcome submission of perspectives, and opinion pieces focusing on Middle East - India Relations. The Middle East and India share a long history of trade, migration and cultural exchange. Their partnerships are based mainly on culture and energy.
1. Culture: The cultural relationship between the two regions dates back to the Silk Road and commercial trade between the ancient civilisations. Cultural relations were improved by maritime trade between the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, which brought Muslim settlers to India. The flow of Islam was strengthened with the Mughal rule. The influence of Islam on Hindu art and architecture was quite discernible. As a result of the cultural influence of Islam, relations between the Middle East and India have traditionally remained strong.
2. Energy: Middle Eastern countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq, Qatar are India's main oil suppliers. At the same time, India’s foreign policy has given priority to cooperation with the oil producing countries of the Persian Gulf. India has been enthusiastic about expansion of cooperation with the Middle Eastern countries. It has maintained a close relationship with the the Arab world without disrupting its relationship with Iran, and avoided getting politically involved in any conflict in the region.
